How To Find a Profitable Niche Market on Amazon?

There are usually two approaches when giving advice on how to choose a niche. The advice for people new to building niche websites, starting a blog, or entering the Internet marketing arena is usually something along the lines of “choose a niche that you are interested in or passionate about”. This isn’t bad advice, in fact it makes a lot of sense. It’s much easier to write about something you love than write about something you’re not interested in. So if you are a “newbie” or just fancy dipping your toes into the online world, then it seems perfectly logical to do it this way.

The problem with this is that the niche you are passionate about may not be a profitable one. For example you may be a great cake baker, but a blog about how to bake a cake, although it could be very informative, would probably only attract visitors seeking to find quick recipes, not necessarily spend their money and buy something. Basically it may not be a very profitable niche market and unless you are pursuing a labour of love it won’t bring you much financially.

We want to find hot niche markets, and if possible find a gap or vulnerability in that niche market that we can exploit to our advantage.

Whether you are hoping to sell digital or physical products the techniques may differ slightly but the principle will remain the same. We are going to look at selling physical products online in this article, Amazon in particular, as this is where I have more experience. We’re also planning to do a full guide on how to build successful Amazon affiliate websites in the future, this article will be part of that guide.

Where do we start looking for our Niche?

The obvious place to start our research if we are planning to sell Amazon products is on Amazon itself. There are lots of other places we can look at too, such as Ebay ,Aliexpress, Alibaba etc but lets stick to Amazon here.

Fortunately for us the Amazon website is designed brilliantly to expose it’s visitors to as many products and offers as possible. Each visitor is a potential buyer so it is essential they capitalize on this by making it as easy as possible for that visitor to part with their money. As a result of this Amazon supplies us with a variety of tools to help us buyers find what we want, or what they think we want. So that is where I look to first when I’m trying to find a profitable niche that I can promote.

I usually start by simply selecting one of the “Departments” from the right hand side bar on the Amazon homepage itself. Although some people have their favorite types of products that they like to promote, it’s not that important which one you choose/click at this point, it’s just a place for us to start – to give us a “feel” if you like.

A lot of people advise that you stay away from Electrical goods when promoting a physical product. The commission paid by Amazon on Electrical goods is low, and it is capped. This is because the mark-up on electrical goods is so tight that suppliers simply can’t share a great deal of the profit with their affiliates. It’s not just Amazon that has low commissions on electrical goods it’s all stores and suppliers, so I personally don’t bother promoting them myself.

Let’s say for the sake of this article that we select “Home Garden & Tools” and then “Appliances” from the side bar menu (You can try it now in a separate browser as you read this). On the following page Amazon will then present us with a whole plethora of different products within that category. Notice also that there is a whole selection of new product ranges down the side bar menu now as well as the ones presented on the main part of the page.  Each one of these product ranges represent a potential niche for us, but I like to dig a little deeper first.

The deeper we dig into a product range and the more specific in our product choice we go, means we will usually find it easier to rank  any website or blog we decide to build to promote that product later on. By laser targeting a product we are doing what a lot of the bigger authority sites cannot do and that is focus and optimize our website on one small but profitable niche.

Staying on this “Appliances” page you will also notice that there are a few ‘widgets’ showing us things such as “Best Sellers in Washes and Dryers”, “Most Wished for in Appliances” and also the latest posts and comments from the customers forum. What more could you wish for when looking for a hot niche? These widgets are basically giving us on a plate everything that buying customers are demanding and spending money on. We just have to fulfill that demand and by doing so we are helping ensure that our niche will be a profitable one with plenty of hungry buyers.

Don’t stop here though, we still need to focus in a little more on a particular product.  I’m going to click on “Robotic Vacuums” to check them out.

Taking a closer look at a Product

When you are on an actual product page (Robotic Vacuums in this example) the first thing we should take a glance at are the prices. Generally speaking you want to choose a product which is $100+, this will ensure that we get a decent level of commission should we choose to promote it. Robotic Vacuum’s seem to meet that criteria as they are priced between $200-$400 so we can tick that box.

You will notice in the top right hand corner of your Amazon page there is a drop-down menu in which you can sort the list by Popularity, Price; Low to High, Price; High to Low, and Average Customer Review. This is a powerful tool for us as it allows us to quickly prioritize the important products in a range/niche to the top. (It usually allows you to sort by “Best Selling” also, but at the time of writing this article it seems to have vanished!)

Next we need to quickly look at the Customer Ratings for the products, (this is represented as stars located below each product). We are not necessarily looking for products with 5 star ratings, we are looking for the items which have sold the most. You can usually get an idea if a product is selling well or is popular by the amount of reviews left by customers (the amount of reviews left for an item should be shown as a number next to the ‘star’ ratings). Much to my surprise Robotic Vacuums seem to be quite popular. Most of them seem to have over 50 reviews, some reaching 300 and even 600 reviews. This is great news for us as it means this product is popular with buyers.

We want to make sure we can find at least 8 or 9 products in this niche that meet both our above criteria (High price tag, and high customer reviews), if we do then we can move onto our next phase.

Keyword Research and Search Volumes

By using the Google Keyword tool to we can get a rough idea about how many times a product, in our case “Robotic Vacuums”, is being searched for each month. obviously the higher the search volumes the better. The Google Keyword Tool will also give us a few good ideas for domain names should we decide to pursue this particular product, basically keep an eye out for those “Buying Keywords”.

We won’t go into the full details about using the keyword tool to find a profitable niche because I’ve already written a more in-depth article on this subject. You can read it here – Effective Keyword Research. I will also include a link to it at the end of this article too.

Generally speaking I look for products with a monthly search volume of around 2000+ a month. Some people may consider this a little low for them, but I’ve had some decent results from these sort of figures. Obviously the high the monthly search volume the better – but if you are just starting out in building Amazon affiliate sites you may find the market a little less competitive at the lower end of the search volumes, and still be able to earn a good few dollars every month.

For what it’s worth Google says that our example keyword gets 2400 searches per month. It also returns other related keywords which we can take into account but they bring in much lower search volumes.

Let’s presume that our product has met the monthly search criteria that we have set out, and that we have noted any other keywords that we could possibly utilize (remember those ‘Buying Keywords!’), we then need to check out any other possible competition.

We can analyze the competition for our potential keywords by using Google itself, or by using alternative tools such as Market Samurai or BuzzSumo. Obviously, we want our keywords/product to have low competition so we need to know if we can out-rank any already established sites within this niche.

A lot of people will not go so far as to check keywords and competition. For some people just knowing that the product is selling well on Amazon is enough encouragement to press ahead and get building their new “Robotic Vacuum” website. And you know what? That’s often enough to bring in great results, but personally I just like to go that little bit further.

A Summary of your Niche Research Strategy

I’ll summarize what we are doing when we use this method to explore Amazon for potential products and niches.

  1. Dig down deep into Amazon utilizing Department Categories, Widgets, Most Wished Lists and the Forum Comments.
  2. Use the Sort drop-down menu to prioritize the products within a Department.
  3. Identify and check any potential products price – is it over $100?
  4. If ‘Yes’ to number 4 then is there over at least 10 reviews?
  5. Use Google Keyword tool to check potential search volumes.
  6. Analyze any potential competition.
  7. Go ahead and promote your product.


Remember, there are lots of different methods for investigating and discovering a niche or product to promote. This is the model I have used on several Amazon Review-style sites and have found it to be a very effective method. Of course, the success of any site will be dependent on a wide range variables, SEO being one of the most important factors. But, at least by using this strategy you will know that the niche you have selected will potentially be a profitable one.

How To Do Effective SEO Keyword Research For A Niche Website?

I built many websites when I first started out, pretty much all of them never saw more than a handful of visitors each day. I thought I had done everything right when building the site and could never understand why it didn’t worked out the way I’d planned. There was probably a number of things that I’d done wrong along the way, but looking back the most important thing I’d messed up was my keyword research.

My keyword research technique at the time basically consisted of me guessing what I thought people were likely to type in Google when searching for something within my niche. It’s not difficult to see what I was doing wrong. Needless to say, unless I got extremely lucky, my website would be doomed from the very start. Even if I did managed to rank number one in Google for one of my guessed keywords there was no guarantee it would bring me any traffic. I needed some solid evidence – I should have done some real effective keyword research before I even considered building a website.

Presuming you have chosen your niche (whether you choose a niche based on keyword research or chose your keywords based on a niche is something I’ll talk about in a later post) your next priority should be targeting the right keywords.

The type of keywords you choose to target will depend somewhat on the type of site you are planning to build. A web site that sells a local service would need to target a different set of keywords compared to a website specifically made to sell an affiliate product to a global niche market. NicheHunt is all about profiting from building successful niche websites, therefore we will use the following as an example.

Let’s imagine you wish to start a website about acoustic guitars (your niche), it’s going to be an informative and entertaining site, but your main intention is to sell acoustic guitars through an affiliate such as Amazon. Now we know this information, we should focus our attention on the “Buying Keywords” associated with acoustic guitars.

“Buying” Keywords

“Buying keywords” are the keywords which imply that the person searching is actively looking to purchase a specific product online, rather than just seeking information. This increases the likelyhood that anybody who visits our site via those keywords will buy something. A couple of examples would be;

best price KEYWORD
buy KEYWORD online
cheapest KEYWORD
cheapest KEYWORD online

KEYWORD compare prices
KEYWORD for sale
KEYWORD for sale online

Replace “KEYWORD” with “ACOUSTIC GUITAR” and you get the idea.

When I mentioned earlier that we are going to focus our attention on the buying keywords, that doesn’t mean we are simply going to take for granted or assume that the word “acoustic guitar” followed by “best price” is going to be a great keyword for us. We need to back up it up with solid evidence, and that’s when we use the Google Keyword Tool.

A vital tool when doing keyword research is Google itself, in particular the Google Keyword Tool. I won’t go into too much detail on how to use it here, this isn’t a technical guide as such, but I will share the basics, as that is all you will really need for now.

It helps when using the Google Keyword tool if you have a Google account, but you can still use it if you don’t. Just type your main keyword into the field at the top of the page, centre left, marked “word or phrase”, in our case type in the phrase “acoustic guitar”. There is a tick box underneath that saying something like “only show results closely related to my search term”, I’m going to leave that un-check for this example, but you may want to experiment with it yourself later on. Now click the “Search” button underneath. You may be asked to fill in a captcha, then your results should appear within a few seconds.

Now, before you get carried away and start salivating over all those lovely keywords, take a look at the left hand column about a quarter of the way down, where it says “Match Type” – make sure that you tick the box marked “Exact”, then un-tick the other two boxes “Phrase” and “Broad”. This is vital to do, if you don’t do it your results will be greatly inaccurate and totally useless for what we need. Believe me, I’ve made the mistake several times before, I still do every now and again. All your efforts will have gone to waste should you fail to make sure the “Exact” box is ticked, and the other two are not!

What you should learn from your Keyword Research results?

For ease of reading, sort your results in descending order in accordance to the amount of Global Monthly Searches. So click the top of the column titled Global Monthly Searches, this should now arrange your results highest to lowest amount of searches per month. Obviously if a phrase is higher up the list, ie it gets searched for more, then we know it will potentially bring us more traffic. But, remember we are looking for those “Buying Keywords”, we want traffic that is ready to buy what we have to offer.

Having a quick scan through I can see straight away that there are a few “buying Keywords” jumping right out at me.

“Guitars for Sale”  = 14,800 monthly searches
“Best Acoustic Guitar” = 6,600 monthly searches*
“Cheap Guitars” = 6,600 monthly searches
“Cheap Acoustic Guitar” = 2,900 monthly searches
“Acoustic Guitars for sale” = 2,400 monthly searches
“Acoustic Guitar Reviews” = 2,400 monthly searches

As you can see the six buying keywords I chose from our results all have what I would consider a decent amount of traffic potential. As a general rule I personally consider anything over 3,000 monthly searches to be worth investigating further. So lets take these six keywords and move on to the next phrase of our research.

Checking out your keyword competition.

Before we decide to run with our six keywords, we need to find out who else is competing for them. In my opinion it doesn’t matter too much whether there are 200 million other web pages or 50 thousand other web pages battling for a keyword. All that really matters are those 10 websites that are on the first page of Google and, crucially, whether or not you can beat them.

Lets type in a our keyword “best acoustic guitar” into Google (without the quotation marks) and see what comes up.What we are looking for when we look at our potential competition is their on-page SEO, and the amount of back-links they have.

Their on-page SEO

Do they have the keyword in…

  1. Their URL?
  2. Their Header tag <H1>?
  3. Their Title tag <title>?
  4. Description tag <meta>?

Believe it or not, you will be surprised at how many websites do not have the keyword you are potentially targeting included in the above tags. It’s basic on page SEO, but a lot of sites miss it, especially the big authority sites like Amazon and Walmart – it’s understandable really, they’re so big and sell such a broad range of items, they don’t need to go “niche” and bother with such little details. We should see this as our advantage.

Looking at the results for “best acoustic guitar” I can see only two of the sites on the first page have our keyword in their URL, Header, Title and Description, so that’s good news for us. But, there’s even better news to come.

Their amount of backlinks

The second thing we need to check for is how many incoming links (or back-links) each one of our competitors has pointing at their page.

There are various ways of doing this. Without going into too much detail I’m just going to suggest you install the SEOBook toolbar on your Firefox browser. This will show you roughly how many inbound links a web page has when you visit it. If you want to investigate the back-links further you can do that too with the SEOBook toolbar. Have a quick look to see what sort of sites are linking to your competition. Are they authority sites? Do they have high Page Rank? etc etc

Using our original example again “Best Acoustic Guitars” – I mentioned earlier that only 2 of the sites on this page of Google for our keyword actually have the keyword in their Title, Header, URL, and Description. Well, one of those sites only has 12 back-links – and those 12 back-links are enough to put it above Amazon! Not only does this show us the importance of getting our on-page SEO right, but it also shows us that we won’t need to build many back-links to our new website to eventually push it to the front page.

Go through this process for every one of your potential keywords to make sure you choose the right ones. Only you will know if you have the ability to compete against some of the big boys so choose your battles wisely. Remember, like the old Chinese proverb says – A sparrow never lands where the lion roams!

A final comment on Keyword Research

You can do everything I’ve explained above in a fraction of the time with the right tools, personally I use Google’s Keyword tool for every single project that I’m working on. It makes the whole process so much easier, it can do so much more than just your keyword research (I probably rely on it a bit too much at times).


Finding a profitable market niche and product

There is a single most important element that has the most significant influence on the success or failure of any business. It is the initial business idea. It consists of your product, your target market niche, and your unique selling proposition (USP). If you have a good business idea, and apply the proper techniques to develop your business, then your success is almost guaranteed. Here are few good tips that will help you to find good business ideas.

What makes a good business idea?

Let’s look closer at the three parts of what we call a business idea. The “product” term is self-explanatory, “target market niche” is also widely used, “USP” is somewhat less known, but we want to make some comments on each of those terms, regardless of their popularity.

Your product is, pretty obviously, what you are trying to sell. It can be a tangible item, like a book or a brick of soap. It can be an electronic item, like an e-book, or downloadable software. At last, it can be an online community membership, your professional service, or anything else you are going to charge your customers for. We call all those things “a product”. The most important attribute of a product is its value. Your product must be valuable for your customers, solve their problems, fulfill their wishes, and generally make them happy.

Your target market niche is your audience, your potential customers. Your target niche should have a reasonable size – large enough to make a good profit, small enough to fit the resources of a small business and avoid competing the large corporations. And your target audience should be easy to reach online through the specialized web sites, online forums, mailing lists, etc.

Your unique selling proposition (USP) is what connects your product with the target audience. It is the heart of your business idea. It can be defined as your marketing strategy, or your business mission. It is the concept that makes your product something more than one of the items on the shelf for sale. It must make your product stand out of the crowd and persuade your prospects that your product is the only perfect solution to their problems.

If all three parts of your business idea meet the above criteria, your chances to succeed are quite good. But how can you find such an idea? Read on, and you’ll learn several ways to do it.

Find a niche that matches your knowledge and skills

The best policy when determining your product and target market is to do what you enjoy doing. You’ll achieve the best results if you love your work. So, first of all, think about the things you like to do most of all. It may be your current job, one of your previous ones, your hobby, your favorite kind of sports, or anything else you like.

Write down all those possible areas of interest, and then think about each one of them separately. Try to answer the following questions:

  • Would you be glad to choose it as a daily job?
  • Do you have some unique skills or knowledge in that field?
  • Who would be interested in your proposition?
  • Would you like to work with those people?

After that, you should have a list of areas of interest that have the best chances to bring you the success.
Now, you can pick one of those areas and start structuring your knowledge. Write down the list of all the basic things one needs to learn to reach your level of success in that area. Then put them in a logical order, so that your customer could learn them in sequence. Then, do the same for each item in your list – break it into smaller parts, and then arrange those small parts in a logical order.

When you finish such two-level lists for several areas of interest, you’ll have some ideas about what you can offer to other people. Look through your lists, and think over each item.

Do you know anything special about it?
Do you have any related skills?
Can you try and create some product to help people solve that problem?
Can you offer something outstanding, not present anywhere else in the market?
Write down your ideas and try to imagine and describe a business built on every of those ideas. Some of them might look weird, but some may be quite viable.
Show your lists and ideas to your friends, listen to their opinion. They’ll surely tell you what ideas they like most, and maybe they’ll even give you some more ideas. They can also point out some logical mistakes you might have made. Ask your friends what products they might need, or what they would be willing to learn. Think how you can help them. Many other people could have the same problems as your friends. Again, write down all new ideas and imagine developing a business.

Do some research in the Internet. Find the web sites related to your areas of interest and your specific ideas. Learn what other people say about those things. Find some related online forums, or newsgroups. Listen to what people say, especially to what they need. If you notice any problems that many people tend to experience, think how you can help them. See if there is some serious competition in your field. As always, write down and think over your new ideas.

And, besides of conducting your research intentionally, always write down the “incidental” ideas that come to you during a walk in the park, or during your lunch. The best ideas often appear at the moments like that, so make sure you don’t forget them. Just make a small note, and then think it over when you have more time.

If you do all of the above, you’ll soon have a ton of ideas. Of course, they will be of different quality. Pick those that you like most, and research them more thoroughly. Try to invent your own products, or find someone else’s products that could make those ideas work. Why consider someone else’s products? Because you can form a joint venture with the product’s owner, and take a commission for selling that product in your specific market niche.

Estimate your chances before the big work

No matter how much you like your idea, don’t be in a hurry. Don’t invest your time and money into a new business until you make sure you’ll be able to profit from it. It would be very disappointing to spend half a year and thousands of dollars into a new product, and then to be unable to sell it to anyone.

First of all, think, would you buy such a product yourself? If you feel doubted, then you should probably work on another idea first. Ask your friends if they would find your product valuable. Maybe they would, but with some changes – write them down.

Try to estimate your market niche size. Internet can be useful here. Look at the search engine statistics, try to find information about the size of mailing lists devoted to your problem, find your potential competitors and think what will make you different. Make sure your target niche will be not too large and not too small.

Make sure your target audience is easily reachable online. Find and collect the addresses of web sites, online forums, and other Internet resources related to your product. Those are the places where you’ll want to advertise and seek for joint ventures.

When you have the addresses of the related online resources, conduct some research in target audience. Place some announces on the Internet and see how people react. If someone follows the links in your ads, or writes you email showing some interest, then your product will definitely be worth something to someone. You can even estimate the price by simply asking people how much they would pay for the solution to their problems, and how much they usually pay for similar products.

Automating the research to save your valuable time

As you have probably noticed, the process of finding business ideas and estimating their potential is rather time-consuming. You probably don’t want to spend several months just searching for ideas and evaluating them. You may be late by the time your research is over, because someone else can take up your target niche with his or her product at that time. Try to use tools like Google Trends Explorer to find out what’s trending or Keyword tool to see what people are searching for the most.

Be different” – perhaps one of the greatest marketing slogans of all times. In fact, it’s so great that it could be placed right next to Shakespeare’s classic dilemma “to be or not to be”.
